Bad Ass Jazz Festival is a place of sharing, learning, inspiring each other and celebrating human expression through dance. BAZZ celebrates the Jazz continuum by bridging dance communities like Swing and it’s descendant Street dances. With a goal of softening the borders between these styles while acknowledging their evolution and differences, BAZZ provides a space for curious movers who want to honor the richness of Afrocentric body movement and language.
This is both dance & music festival, so equal importance is on live music. So rather than music being here for dancers, we share the space equally with musicians and fuel each other with energy and inspiration!
With an intention to celebrate and acknowledge the Jazz Continuum, at BAZZ you can also hear and party to variety of live & DJ music that falls into that spectrum, however, we will always centre Black American Old School Jazz!
Throughout the weekend you can learn from Bad Ass teachers and get down with amazing people to LIVE music by musicians who really know how to get people moving! In a charming city of Amsterdam, a monumental art nouveau building Kompaszaal will provide us with a space to learn during the day, and in the evening Kompaszaal will turn into a sweaty nightclub where you can enjoy live music covering the wide spectrum of genres from Jazz, Rhythm & Blues, Soul, Hip Hop, Funk all the way to Amapiano, Afrohouse, and much more – Basically everything that makes us pump the chest and shake that butt.
LEVELS & PASSES:
KICK ASS level & KICK ASS PRO are oriented towards enthusiastic dancers and passionate learners that want a total immersion of various Social and Club dance styles throughout this weekend! These levels are available only within a FULL PASS package
KICK ASS is recommended for INT/INT+. You’re comfortable with weight shifts and moving through space. You’re familiar with most of the basic vocabulary, but some pieces are missing. You’re still searching to expand your knowledge on basics, transitions and body awareness. You need more guidance around improvisation and generally throughout the class, but you’re ready to push yourself outside of your comfort zone and finish the weekend like a Bad Ass.
BAZZ PRO is recommended for ADV/ADV+ dancers with good body awareness, body control, and fluent improvisation skills, who want to challenge their current limits. You easily follow combinations, you’re enthusiastic about exploring intricate rhythms, techniques and movement in greater depth, while adding your own voice to it. You’re comfortable with a faster pace of learning, you’re fluent in improvisation but want to level it up like pro!
CHILLAX is for everyone who wants a taste of BAZZ Vibes, but still wants to have enough time to explore Amsterdam and relax during the day. This group will have an easy going schedule with less number of classes than a full pass, scheduled in the afternoon. It will be an OPEN level, which means approachable to a wide range of dance experience
