BAD ASS Teacher Helena Kanini Kiiru!
Helena Kanini Kiiru is a young dancer, performer and teacher based in Zagreb, Croatia. After 7 years of dancing hip hop, she found herself very quickly in solo jazz dance styles. Her talent was recognized at Paris Jazz Roots festival 2018, where she won both solo and showcase competition. After that, her career began to grow rapidly and she started to teach internationally. Helena stands out due to her charisma, authenticity and fluidity. Now she enjoys exploring endless connections between all the African-American dance styles she learned, and she is ready to spread her love and joy for authentic jazz.
She is one of the most energetic and inspiring solo jazz dancers we have come across and that is why she qualifies as Bad Ass! Not convinced yet? Check these out:

BAD ASS Teacher Christine “Tine Machine” Gatchalian!
Tine started her first tap class at age 3 and has been dancing ever since. After many years of Hip Hop, Cheer-leading, Modern, and Street Jazz, she moved to New York City in 2004 to immerse herself in its underground dance scene. During her 9 years there, she trained in the many styles the city had to offer, including House, Voguing, Waacking, Latin Hustle, Afrobeats, Breakin, Funk Styles and Capoeira.
When she moved to Harlem in 2011, Tine intended to learn Lindy Hop and vernacular jazz in her new neighborhood and to connect to the roots of all the dances she had previously been practicing. Little did she know that her curiosity would become her main obsession that would take her all over Europe and beyond, winning numerous international swing dance competitions in the process. A few of her awards include ILHC Pro-Am, Harlem LT Solo Jazz Battle, Swing Crash Festival, Savoy Cup Cabaret and Solo Jazz, Atlantic Swing Festival, Camp Savoy, the “Spirit of Jazz” award at Paris Jazz Roots and the Frankie Manning Ambassadorship. Now based in London, she has appeared on The Apprentice UK with the award-winning Brat Pack, where she is currently the troupe’s Dance Captain.
Tine’s love of movement and interest in many dances of the African diaspora allows a unique approach to her jazz classes. Though her classes can be technically demanding (and make you move muscles you never knew you had!) Tine aims to develop one’s individuality, honesty and freedom in their dance.
We are sure if you don’t yet know her, you will fall in love with this Bad Ass teacher after watching these video’s:

MUSIC

HOMMAGE
The Amsterdam based band HOMMAGE brings a tribute to the classic swing music of the Roaring Twenties, Dirty Thirties and Fantastic Fourties. With their very own ‘New Orleans feel’, they will move your feet from the very first moment they start playing.
The tremendous rhythm section knows how to keep the energy up right from the start, and the horn section provides you with wonderful melodies and beautiful solos. The band has some great vocals and features music from composers such as Sidney Bechet, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Fats Waller.
HOMMAGE is well established on the Dutch Swing dance scene and has performed during various Lindy Hop parties and festivals like Ceuvel Swing Camp and Smokey Feet. Make sure you don’t miss them and dance to HOMMAGE like there is no tomorrow!

Spirit of St. Louis
Meet the Spirit of St. Louis, a brassband from Amsterdam that plays authentic American swing. The band played at various Dutch music festivals, among others the Zwarte Cross (2018) and Down the Rabbit Hole (2019). Good chance you will find the group busking on a sunny Sunday afternoon in Westerpark Amsterdam: unplugged, surrounded by swing and blues dancers who show that the spirit of the roaring twenties is still alive. They are also a favourite of our Sunday Swing Dances in Amsterdam.
